"November 11, 2007: 3 people were killed and more than 30 injured at the Supermarket Carrefour in Chongqing, China when the shop was offering 20% discounts on cooking oil."
cooking oil? discounted cooking oil! and 20% yet? i mean, cmon! anyways, im gonna spend the next hour wikipedia and googling this incident. ive got work to do but this ranks pretty high in the cue of 'important things to get done this weekend'.
update: apparently (and by apparently i mean according to wikipedia) the highest death toll of any stampede or panic in the world goes to the calm footed people of Chongqing (again!) where in 1941, 4,000 people were killed in an air raid shelter during a japanese bombing, due to suffocation and trampoling. that bit of information should be an asterisk for every big sale advertised in Chongqing newspapers. clearly these people are easily over-excitable.
